New Bar, Deck & More for Winter 2021/22

After a summer of improvements across the mountain, we are upping the ante for next winter.

We are excited to announce the addition of a new bar and lounge adjacent to the Eagle’s Nest! The new bar will have a long row of seats along the counter, plus it will have a sitting area with great views of the slopes.

We’ll also be constructing a 2,000 square foot deck on the west side of our building. The new deck will be a gathering place for afternoon sun in both summer and winter.

The improvements continue with new flooring, lighting and paint throughout the Bear’s Den and Upper Commons.

Plus, we’ll be moving all lockers into a dedicated locker room at the north side of the building. The new locker room will offer seating for booting-up and it will have easy access to parking in the rear of the base lodge

The projects begin this spring with all of the new amenities ready for the winter of 2021/22.

All these improvements are consistent with our principle to “Keep It Wild” – a commitment to improve the guest experience without losing the vibe that makes Wild, Wild.

Proudly Carbon Neutral

We are proud to announce that Wild Mountain has achieved carbon neutrality, an environmental milestone, through reducing energy use, diverting waste and offsetting carbon.

Environmental stewardship is a key pillar to Wild Mountain’s operations, and we achieved the CarbonNeutral® Certification from Natural Capital Partners, the leading experts on carbon neutrality, which works with organizations around the world to deliver solutions that ensure immediate, positive impacts on the world’s natural capital.

To achieve carbon neutrality, Natural Capital Partners worked with us to calculate and offset the property’s unavoidable emissions by supporting a project to reduce the equivalent emissions. Natural Capital Partners identified the Seneca Meadows Landfill Gas project in New York. By providing essential carbon finance to this project, Wild Mountain supports the capture of methane (a potent greenhouse gas) from New York’s largest non-hazardous solid waste facility to generate electricity to power 18,000 homes. Along with achieving the CarbonNeutral® Certification, Wild Mountain is working on numerous environmental initiatives which include:

  • Working to eliminate single-use plastic across all of its operations which will divert up to 288,000 pieces of plastic from the waste stream by September 2021.
  • Operating on 100% clean energy by offsetting dirty energy with renewable energy certificates from energy installations in Minnesota.
  • Offering new eco-friendly shirts and hoodies made from 100% recycled fabric which uses 10-times less water and fossil fuel to create.
  • Began an LED light conversion for night skiing across the trail system.

Of course, there’s more that we can do to account for our environmental impacts. But, achieving carbon neutrality is a positive step on our journey to Keep It Wild.

Keep It Wild Story

We want Wild Mountain to be successful today, and successful in 100 years from today.  That means we need to make investments for the good of our campus and the climate.

Improvements are being made from laptop to mountaintop to improve the guest experience.  Plus, we are making decisions that address carbon emissions, waste diversion and support renewable energy.

Our investments in the physical property and the environment are just getting started.  We still have a long road ahead of us, but we hope you’ll notice our efforts on this journey.

All of these investments have a common thread – we intend to Keep It Wild.  What’s that mean?  It’s simple - Wild Mountain is a special place and 100% Minnesota.  We intend to retain the vibe that been humming here for the last 59 years.

Environmental Initiatives

Electric Snowmobiles

Electric Snowmobiles

We've pre-ordered two Taiga Nomad electric snowmobiles.  We'll be one of the first ski areas in North America to convert to electric, emissions-free snowmobiles.  Oh yeah... they also go zero to 60mph in 3 seconds.

Carbon Neutral

In January 2021, Wild Mountain was awarded the CarbonNeutral® Certiffication from Natural Capital Partners for its work  on reducing and offsetting its carbon emissions.

CARBON MONITORING

CARBON MONITORING

In September of 2020 we began working with Natural Capital Partners to measure our carbon footprint.  Measurement of the carbon we are emitting is a critical step in the long-term assessment and reduction of our carbon-emitting practices.

ECO-FRIENDLY RETAIL

ECO-FRIENDLY RETAIL

We’ve added a new line of eco-friendly retail items that are made from 100% recycled fabric (50% plastic, 50% recycled cotton) which creates a soft and bright fabric that uses 10-times less water and fossil fuels to create.  Over time, we hope our entire logo collection will be made from this recovered fabric.

LED LIGHT CONVERSION

LED LIGHT CONVERSION

We installed our first LED light on the South Wild trail. LED lighting is much more efficient than our current metal halide lighting.  Going forward, we plan to use LEDs to replace our existing flood lights across our slopes.

IMPROVED RECYCLING

IMPROVED RECYCLING

We are eliminating single-use plastic beverage bottles and moving to infinitely recyclable aluminum bottles.  To support that, we’ve added recycling receptacles across our property to support recycling and reduce waste.

SINGLE-USE PLASTIC REDUCTION

SINGLE-USE PLASTIC REDUCTION

Wild Mountain created 288,000 pieces of single-use plastic waste in the past year. That's too much, and we are working to stop that with the elimination of single-use plastic on our property. We’ve moved to durable cutlery and food service wares in the goal of reducing the amount of plastic we add to the waste stream. stream.

100% CLEAN ENERGY

100% CLEAN ENERGY

Our team partnered with 3Degrees to offset the dirty energy coming to Wild Mountain with Renewable Energy Certificates generated from sources in Minnesota.  Wild Mountain now operates year-round on 100% clean energy created in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING

ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING

Telsa chargers were installed to support the needs of the emerging clean vehicle market.  These two chargers are available to all guests, free of charge.
